FACTS~GANG ACTIVITY IN SCHOOL
Gangs Have: ~ different levels of hierarchy ~ a set of rules, either written or unwritten ~ expectations set by the gang to fulfill at school ~ the need to recruit ~ a chain of command ~ the need to expand territories ~ the power to be recognized by their signs, dress, actions, etc. ~ the need to further the gang financially by the sale of contraband ~ the need to defend their colors.
If a child is contemplating on joining a gang these mandates will be expected of them. They will have to abide by these and other stipulations in order to start being accepted into the gang. It will take a wanna-be many hours of gang rituals before they are truly accepted as a full-fledged member. The goal of every wanna-be is to earn hardcore status, thus allowing them all the privileges provided by the gang.
These privileges can include, but are not limited too, the first to hit in a jump-in, money given to them by their subordinates daily, to being the first to introduce a female to the gang. There are many more perks hardcore members receive, which can vary greatly from gang to gang. With all the perks being provided, by gangs, to potential recruits one can see how many students searching for acceptance of some kind will be drawn into gang life.
Recruitment practices for gangs can range from self recruitment to the often used family intimidation tactic, in which intimidation of a potential recruits entire family as leverage to have them join. The main goal of every gang is to have the largest representation on the streets and at school.
